Term 2 Week 4 - 2023
From the Principal
Dear Parents, Carers and the wider St Francis Catholic School Community,
I hope this newsletter finds you well and that you have had a great week. As we come to the end of week 4, it is hard to imagine that in just six weeks, we will be wrapping up another term.
Firstly, I would like to extend a thank you to all of our St Francis staff and all those who joined us on Tuesday, 9th May 2023 for our Under 8's day. It was a great success, and we were thrilled to see so many families attending with future students of St Francis, as well as students and staff from Cameron Downs and Hughenden State School for joining. We hope you all had an enjoyable day.
As we head into the colder months, we kindly remind you to ensure that your child is dressed appropriately for the weather. It is important to remain warm during these cold times. If a student is required to wear a piece of clothing that does not meet the uniform policy, a written explanation from their parent/carer is required, as well as a date for when this breach will be amended. We ask that you check your child's uniform to ensure that they are following the school policy, including shoes and socks.
Tomorrow, Friday the 12th of May, we will be celebrating Mother's Day and Grandmother's Day with a breakfast and liturgy. All are welcome to join us, and the BBQ will be on from 7:30 with Bacon and Egg sandwiches rolling out in the morning. We hope to see you there to celebrate this special day with our St Francis community.
Lastly, we would like to wish you all a wonderful weekend ahead. We hope that you enjoy some quality time with your loved ones and come back refreshed for another great week at St Francis.
God Bless,
Scott Murray

Prep/1 Happenings
We love our new play equipment! P/1 had a chance to test out the new playground and they loved every minute of it. We have gone over the safety rules and have discovered that we can fit our whole class in it at once! It is such fun!
Miss Brown,
Year 2/3/4 Happenings
In Religion, we have practised finding different stories, psalms and other texts using the Bible’s referencing system. We learned how to find the different books, chapters and verses, and even had a little competition to see how many everyone could find. We love to see each of the students becoming more confident using the Bible.

Year 5/6 Happenings
This week we expanded our understanding of light through exploring how light can be reflected. We wrote investigatable questions about whether the angle we shone a torch at affected how the light reflected and if any other materials were able to reflect the light like a mirror.

School refusal
Have you had to deal with grumbling kids who don’t want to go back to school after the winter holidays?
While some school reluctance is normal, spare a thought for parents whose back-to-school struggles have reached a whole new dimension. Their child’s reluctance to go to school has escalated into a more significant psychological problem, called school refusal.
Around 1-2% of children experience school refusal: becoming severely distressed at the prospect of going to school and having prolonged absences.
Unlike truancy, young people diagnosed with school refusal don’t experience other behavioural concerns: their parents know where they are; they remain at home despite their parents’ best efforts to get them to go to school.
School refusal commonly arises after a period of school absence – due to illness or holidays – or a big change, such as starting a new school or moving from primary to high school.
No one factor or person is to blame for school refusal; it’s caused by a complex interaction of multiple risk factors involving the child (such as a fear of failure), their family (such as overprotective parenting or illness), the school (such as bullying), and social challenges (such as pressure to achieve academically).
If your child refuses to go to school, or you’re supporting another parent or child in this situation, SchoolTV has some guidance around how you can respond
