From the Principal

Dear Parents and Carers,

As we come to the end of Week 3, we have some exciting updates to share with you for the upcoming weeks.

Firstly, we are excited to announce our Under 8's Day, taking place next Tuesday, May 9th. The theme for this year's event is Super Heroes, and we can't wait to see all of our young superheroes in action. The event will run from 9:00 am to 11:00 am, and we encourage all parents to bring snacks for their children as all these little heroes will be sure to work up an appetite. We look forward to seeing you all there!

On Friday, May 12th, we will be celebrating our Mothers and Grandmothers with a special breakfast and liturgy. All are welcome to attend the breakfast, which will take place from 7:30 am to 8:10 am, followed by the liturgy at 8:40 am. This will be a great opportunity for our community to come together and show appreciation for the important role that mothers and grandmothers play in our lives.

We also have some staffing updates to share with you. Unfortunately, Mrs Amelia Wilson will be departing our school at the end of this term due to family reasons. We would like to thank Miss Millie for her contributions to our school community and wish her all the best in her future endeavors. We also have some good news to share, as we have appointed Miss Telisa Howie as our new School Chaplain. Miss Telisa will work towards engaging with students and the wider community on important issues, activities, and projects for our school, while also being a listening ear for students who need someone to talk to.

As a reminder, the Tuckshop will be closed on Friday, May 19th, in preparation for our upcoming Cocktail Evening Fundraiser. We are excited to see the community engaging and getting their tickets early, with over 40% capacity reached in just a few days of tickets being on sale. If you are interested in attending or would like to help with set up or pack up, please reach out to us at sfsh@tsv.catholic.edu.au.

Finally, we would like to remind our community that we still have over half a term to go and encourage parents to stay involved and engaged in their child's education. We appreciate all of your support and look forward to seeing you in Week 4.

Wishing you all a great weekend and God Bless.

Sincerely,

Scott Murray

A/Principal

Prep/1 Happenings

2D Shapes, 3D shapes, P/1 have looked at them all! Over the last 2 weeks P/1 have been investigating two dimensional shapes and three dimensional objects. It’s been such fun looking at all the different shapes and their features.

Year 2/3/4 Happenings

In Religion, we learned about a story with two brothers named Jacob and Esau. Jacob tricked his father into giving him a special blessing meant for Esau, his older brother. We played a game where we had to recognise our friends only by touching their hands, just like Jacob did in the story. This game helped us understand how Jacob tricked his father and why it's important to be honest and truthful in our everyday lives.

Year 5/6 Happenings

We have been exploring the properties of light in Science this term. This week, we used torches to discover how much light different objects let through. Using this, we were then able to classify them as either opaque, transparent or translucent. We then used our understandings of opaque, transparent and translucent objects to help us understand how shadows are formed.

Guidos Gossip

As we all know, school can be stressful for students of all ages. Along with navigating the school year comes experiences with teachers, classmates, and routines that can trigger anxiety in even the most confident students. Some students may experience separation anxiety from their parents, while others might feel anxious about not fitting in or doing well in class.

It’s important to recognize the signs of anxiety in children and adolescents, which can include excessive worrying, irritability, trouble sleeping, stomach aches or headaches, and difficulty concentrating. If left unaddressed, anxiety can lead to more serious mental health issues such as depression or substance abuse.

Therefore, it’s crucial that parents engage in open and honest conversations with their children about their worries and concerns. This can help children feel supported and understood, which can go a long way in reducing their anxiety. Encouraging children to practice mindfulness, engage in physical activity, and spend time with supportive friends and family members can also be helpful strategies for managing anxiety.

Remember, anxiety is a normal part of life, but it doesn’t have to control our lives. Let’s work together to support our students as they navigate the challenges of a new school year with confidence and resilience. School TV has some useful tips on how to start the conversation with children and teens.
