Term 1 Week 4: 2023
From the Principal
Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members,
I hope you have all had a productive and enjoyable week. This week, I have been away in Townsville with a number of Courses.
It has been a busy week this week, with a number of events and activities. Some of our students on Wednesday, along with Miss Eriksen travelled to Julia Creek for MidWest trials.
Students trialled in Rugby League and Touch, and some of our students were successful in obtaining a position.
Congratulations to Beau, Blaze, Bryce and Cade, for being selected to represent the School and Mid West at the next level of sport. We look forward to following your journey and updating the community. A big thank you must also go to Miss Eriksen as well for taking the students away for this. Without staff volunteering to go to these, we wouldn’t have school sport in the west, so thank you Miss Eriksen.
I look forward to seeing you all once I return tomorrow morning. I hope you all have a fantastic weekend with family and friends.
God Bless,
Scott Murray,
A/Principal

Prep/1 Happenings
In Science we have been learning all about materials and their physical properties. We’ve looked at bending, folding and stretching different materials. This week we looked at scrunching. The students conducted an experiment to see which material out of alfoil, glad wrap and paper towel would scrunch into the smallest ball.

Year 2/3/4 Happenings
In Science, we have been learning about life cycles. We have looked at the life cycles of plants and animals, like butterflies, frogs and chickens. Students also got the opportunity to research other life cycles of animals of their choice.

Year 5/6 Happenings
We have been loving learning through hands-on activities in Maths this week. We have been exploring probability and how we can write it as fractions. The students have engaged with lots of different activities. They have been sorted into the Harry Potter houses using playdough and ordered themselves using decimals, fraction and percentage representations of probabilities.

School Wellbeing
Why is sleep important?
Our children these days seem to be heading to bed later and later. Distractions such as TV, computer games, internet, texting friends and social media are all impacting their quality of sleep. Sleep is vital to a child’s wellbeing, and when they sleep well, they are more settled, happier and ready for school the next day.
Sleep also strengthens their immune system, supports overall development and their ability to function properly on a daily basis. Children who do not get enough sleep show increased levels of aggressive behaviour, have difficulty with concentrating and are less active.
Trying to catch up on sleep during the weekends is not the answer and can still lead to severe sleep deprivation. Recent studies suggest many children and teenagers are missing out on vital REM sleep, which is particularly important for memory and learning.
Dr Sarah Blunden is a psychologist and Founding Director of the Australian Centre for Education in Sleep. For the past 10 years, she has researched, treated and provided education on children’s sleep both nationally and internationally. Check out the link for the full specialist edition on SchoolTV
