Term 2 Week 3: 2022
From the Principal...
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
Another short week comes to a close and I’m sure we won’t know ourselves when we get back into 5 day weeks next week!
NAPLAN begins Tuesday and I have attached our schedule below again. I will be running the NAPLAN sessions with the assistance of Lucy and Sarah throughout the week as they take turns in supervising the 4’s & 6’s as well. We feel we have put in a lot of time and effort into preparing the students in a variety of ways. I have no doubt our students will give their absolute best next week.
Week beginning 10/05 | Monday | Tuesday | Wednesday | Thursday | Friday |
Session 1 9.00am | Writing | Reading | Spelling & Grammar | Numeracy |
We have our first FACE meeting for the Term today and we hope you can all make it at 3pm in our eating area. There are a few important items on the agenda for discussion. For those that can’t make it, I will place the notes from the meeting on COMPASS next week.
We also have our Mother’s Day liturgy and pampering session in the morning at 8.45am. We would love to see Mum’s, Grandma’s and special guests join us for the morning. It’s a lovely morning for our mum’s to sit and relax with a cuppa and some cake! I spotted this lovely Irish Blessing whilst planning our liturgy and wanted to share wiyh you all:
There is but one and only one,
Whose love will fail you never.
One who lives from sun to sun,
With constant fond endeavor.
There is but one and only one
On earth there is no other.
In heaven a noble work was done
When God gave us a Mother.

We have our yellow team visiting tomorrow from Townsville Catholic Education. The yellow team consists of Laurence Hosking- Education Consultant, Katherine Nelson- Curriculum Advisor, Anita Livingston- Religious Education Advisor and Krista O’Connor- Indigenous Education Advisor. The team will be working with me for the morning and will be joining us for our liturgy.
Their roles as you can see are to support both myself and our teachers in all aspects of our school. We look forward to their visit tomorrow.
Have a wonderful weekend,

Prep/1/2 Happenings..
In P/1/2 we love hands on learning! In Literacy and Numeracy we use physical manipulatives as much as possible. It helps to engage us in our learning as well as make learning fun. We’ve been looking at our 2D shapes in Maths! As usual we also love our rotational activities as well! Another busy week in our magical classroom.

Year 3/4 Happenings...
In Science, we have been learning about heat! Students were given a plastic bag with a handful of ice in the bag. The students were challenged to melt the ice as quickly as they can with anything they could find in the classroom. They got very creative! Some students put their bag next to the window for the sun. Some students used the body heat of another person. Some students rubbed their ice bag against their hands or the carpet. Some students warmed their ice by leaving it in their sock. They did a fantastic job!

Year 5/6 Happenings...
We have been focusing on writing entertaining narratives in English, filled with lots of descriptive language. We have been using a range of different picture books to help us understand how we can apply this to our own writing. We have practiced writing thorough descriptions of settings and characters.

Celebrating Mother’s Day
Here are some fun facts about how we began to celebrate mothers.
1908- The very first Mother’s Day was celebrated in West Virginia. To honour Ann Jarvis’s mother who devoted her life to educating mothers and improving sanitary conditions to stem her community’s appalling infant mortality rates. By 1911, Ann had successfully campaigned to have Mother's Day recognised as a national holiday in most US states honouring all mothers, living and deceased.
1909- It is believed the tradition of Mother’s Day was not due to the American custom and was instead inspired by a New Zealander named Selina Cosgrove. She was the wife of Lieutenant Colonel David Cosgrove. David had instructed the scouts to honour Selina’s birthday, instead, Selina requested the scouts to honour their mothers.
Fast forward quite a few years, and in 2022 we are encouraged to celebrate Mother’s Day by reflecting on the true meaning of what a mother represents as well as marking it with sincerity. Mothers wear many hats providing care and support to those they love, more recently, this has been under some pretty average circumstances. The community around mothers are critical for reminding them to take care of themselves, especially when it comes to mental health. We know that mothers who have healthy well-being are much more present within their family and more alert to their needs.
If you are a Mum and struggling a little bit, it is advisable to seek help from a medical professional. Or, if you just want to talk to someone who understands, you can always call Lifeline on 0800 543 354 or text HELP to 4357.
