From the Principal...
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
We kicked off week 2 of Term 2 with our Annual community ANZAC March. There was a lovely turn out of students that represented our school with pride and demonstrated excellent behaviour- thank you to all of those who were able to join us for the march. The students sang both In Flanders Fields and The Last ANZAC in which they performed wonderfully and we are all so proud of them.
We also held an ANZAC Liturgy last Friday which was a lovely celebration in remembrance of our soldiers who have and still fight for our country. Thank you to the parents for joining us.
A reminder that NAPLAN is on the 10th-20th of May this term and our Year 3s and 5s will be participating in a variety of tests including numeracy, language conventions, writing and reading. NAPLAN has strict guidelines in which we need to follow including limited to no teacher assistance, time limitations and individual seating in bare classrooms. The tests (apart from year 3 writing) are also conducted online which means the students need to have the technical skills to be able to successfully complete the tests. We have been preparing our students for NAPLAN by engaging in readiness tests online, using writing prompts from previous years, 10 minutes of writing each day using WIRE or other stimuli and using our chromebooks during classtime to continue to build our computer skills.
Our test schedule for the week is outlined below. If your child is absent for any tests we have a window of time in which we can make these up. Students can also be withdrawn with parental consent, if you have concerns around your child particpating please give our office a call to make an appointment and we can discuss this further.
Week beginning 10/05 | Tuesday | Wednesday | Thursday | Friday |
Session 1 9.00am | Writing | Reading | Spelling & Grammar | Numeracy |
We have another FACE Meeting next Thursday at 3pm under the school in our eating area. There are a few fundraising opportunities on the agenda along with the Fete, and funding from the council which need to be discussed. We would love to see everyone come along if you are available.
We are having a Mothers’ Day Liturgy and pampering next Friday which we hope our Mums can all come along and enjoy, we will finish off the morning with some cake and a cuppa. We would love to see you all there!
Have a wonderful long weekend (again)!

Prep/1/2 Happenings..
We’ve been very busy this week in P/1/2! We’ve been looking at calendars and why they’re used. We made a huge one on the classroom floor. In literacy we also had some fun with our whiteboard table practising our sight words.
Miss Brown,
ebrown17@sfsh.catholic.edu.au
Year 3/4 Happenings...
In Religion, we are discussing how God wants us to live a moral life, which means, to be good and caring people! We discussed where in the Bible it mentions looking after other people. We also looked at the letter written by Pope Francis in 2015 called the Laudato Si'. Once we did that, we had some meditative colouring with this cool picture.
Miss Allison,
sallison1@sfsh.catholic.edu.au
Year 5/6 Happenings...
We have been busy learning about the different types of energy in science, and how energy can never be created or destroyed. These include electric, heat, light, nuclear, movement, gravitational, elastic, chemical, magnetic and sound. This week, we went on a scavenger hunt around the school to see how many different types of energy we could find.
Miss Eriksen,

Celebrating Mother’s Day
Here are some fun facts about how we began to celebrate mothers.
1908- The very first Mother’s Day was celebrated in West Virginia. To honour Ann Jarvis’s mother who devoted her life to educating mothers and improving sanitary conditions to stem her community’s appalling infant mortality rates. By 1911, Ann had successfully campaigned to have Mother's Day recognised as a national holiday in most US states honouring all mothers, living and deceased.
1909- It is believed the tradition of Mother’s Day was not due to the American custom and was instead inspired by a New Zealander named Selina Cosgrove. She was the wife of Lieutenant Colonel David Cosgrove. David had instructed the scouts to honour Selina’s birthday, instead, Selina requested the scouts to honour their mothers.
Fast forward quite a few years, and in 2022 we are encouraged to celebrate Mother’s Day by reflecting on the true meaning of what a mother represents as well as marking it with sincerity. Mothers wear many hats providing care and support to those they love, more recently, this has been under some pretty average circumstances. The community around mothers are critical for reminding them to take care of themselves, especially when it comes to mental health. We know that mothers who have healthy well-being are much more present within their family and more alert to their needs.
If you are a Mum and struggling a little bit, it is advisable to seek help from a medical professional. Or, if you just want to talk to someone who understands, you can always call Lifeline on 0800 543 354 or text HELP to 4357.
