From the Principal...

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

Our term continues to fly by and we have only 2 weeks left before holidays. It has been a busy week with multiple visitors popping in.

Brittany McGill our Guidance Councelor was here on Monday and Tuesday to work with the staff, and students. The children engaged in lessons about bullying in preparation for National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence this Friday 18th May. Brittany also did some circle time lessons with the students which focuses on helping students regulate and recognise emotions. The staff also worked with Brittany on Tuesday afternoon to learn more about the Zones of Regulation as this is something the teachers are beginning to implement in our classrooms. The Zones of Regulation framework and curriculum teaches students skills that work toward developing a metacognitive pathway to build awareness of their feelings and utilise a variety of tools and strategies for regulation, prosocial skills, self-care, and overall wellness. This includes exploring tools and strategies for mindfulness, sensory integration, movement, thinking strategies, wellness, and healthy connection with others. The Zones of Regulation provides a common language and compassionate framework to support positive mental health and skill development for all. Brittany has been a wonderful addition to our school and we love having her work with our children and staff.

I also spent the day with our curriculum consultant Katherine Nelson on Wednesday discussing all things learning and teaching. Katherine is a valuable member of our Townsville Catholic Education Service Learning Team and visits our school each term to work with both myself and the Staff.

We are celebrating St Patrick’s Day today and the children are all dressed in green! The Year 6 leaders prepared and sold green milkshakes at first break with all donations going towards Caritas’ Project Compassion. From all reports the milkshakes were delicious.

We have the team from Life Education visiting next Tuesday and the kids are very much looking forward to seeing Harold again! I’m sure it’ll be another excellent experience for the students to learn about a variety of topics including friendships, healthy bodies and emotions.

A very busy week ahead!

Take care,

Sharn Greenaway

Prep/1/2 Happenings..

The year 1’s and 2’s have been learning all about place value! We’ve begun to explore place value into 1000's. The students have done an absolutely spectacular job learning about this tricky Math’s concept. We’ve been able to do a number of fun activities like our castles, we’ve made place value monsters and we’ve been looking a lot at our hundreds, tens and ones blocks to help us learn!

Year 3/4 Happenings...

In English, we were practicing writing sentences with speech marks. In this activity, students made silly sentences with a worksheet and rolling dice. We then had to make sure we had all the punctuation in the correct spot.

Year 5/6 Happenings...

It has been 5 weeks of us growing our sunflowers but unfortunately we only had one successful plant. This week in science we looked at salinity, how it affects plants and why it caused our salt water Sunflowers to not grow. We loved being able to make our google slides interactive, with the students having to draw their responses on the slides.

Guido's Gossip...

Kindness Culture- it starts with you

National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence- 18th March 2022

The national day of action against bullying and violence is Australia’s key bullying prevention initiative. It celebrates 12 years of action, connecting schools and communities to find workable solutions to prevent bullying.

The theme for 2022 is ‘kindness culture’. By building a kindness culture together, we can promote inclusion, respect, and community belonging for all students in schools across Australia. Kindness plays an important role in bullying prevention and the 2022 theme offers an opportunity to learn about kindness and demonstrate kind behavior.

Bullying should be taken seriously, and children need to know they are being heard and that their feelings matter. In week 8 our guidance counsellor will be refreshing our understanding of what bullying is, how to respond and support as well as how to prevent the behaviours

For more information on how you can help your school in addressing bullying concerns please follow the link below:

See you soon,

Brittany
