Term 1 Week 2: 2022
From the Principal...
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
It has been a lovely week here at St Francis with our leaders being inducted and our children participating in our Opening Liturgy on Wednesday. A very special occasion for the Year 6 students as they received their badges and senior shirts for the year ahead. I strongly believe they will be a wonderful group of leaders and guide their peers beautifully throughout the year. I am very excited to be working with them and hearing all of the wonderful ideas they have for our little school! I was delighted to share a morning tea with the students and their parents and enjoyed spending quality time with them all!
Our Parent Information Evening was also a success and the teachers shared valuable information about their classes this year. If you were unable to attend please feel free to contact your child’s teacher for a copy of the parent booklet that was handed out on the night. This booklet contains important information about your child’s learning and classroom routines throughout the week.
As mentioned at Parent Information Evening, our Diocese is putting a focus on writing in Naplan this year and as a school we will also be focusing on spelling. We are participating in multiple writing programs as well as daily writing and have incorporated the soundwaves spelling program into all 3 classrooms. The goal is to see improvement in both of these areas throughout the year.
The date is set for our very first FACE Meeting of the year on Wednesday March 2nd. We hope to see many old and new faces. There are multiple agenda items including fundraising for school camp and Mulkadee, Tuckshop and Fun Run Ideas for this year. Everyone is welcome to join us from 3pm in our downstairs eating area.
The children have all settled in well and the classrooms are buzzing with learning and laughter! Our specialist lessons have begun and the students participate in Technology, Art, Music and HPE on a Friday. A busy day but plenty of fun nonetheless. We have a great term ahead of us!
Until Next week,

Prep/1/2 Happenings..
In P/1/2 we use a lot of hands-on activities to learn our letters and sounds. In Literacy this week we practiced matching our letters and pictures! The students were all very proud of their work.

Year 3/4 Happenings...
In Religion, we have had lots of discussions about prayer and why we pray. A prayer to God is a lot like giving a friend a greeting card to say "thank you", "I'm sorry", or "I hope you get well soon". For this religion lesson, we prayed to God by creating a greeting card for him. It allowed us to practice our prayers of Petition, Praise, and Thanksgiving.

Year 5/6 Happenings...
Ciao Bella! This year we are learning Italian in LOTE. Our first focus for Italian has been 'Saluti' or greetings. We have learnt how to say many greetings such as hello, goodbye, see you later, and goodnight.

Guido's Gossip...
Hi St Francis community,
I am Brittany the guidance counsellor who will be visiting St Francis twice a term. I will be at St Francis generally in weeks 3 and 8 of each term and I look forward to working amongst such a beautiful community.
It is important that families and schools have access to resources that are designed to provide information on important topics that relate to parenting and the wellbeing of our children. Due to the difficulties with accessing services rurally, I wanted to share a brilliant resource that can be accessed via your school websites. School TV has partnered with Townsville Catholic Education to deliver ongoing support to parents, teachers, school and pastoral staff. It is a platform that is integral as a part of the whole school approach to our student’s wellbeing. School TV is readily available to all parents and families, with each topic or edition addressing key issues. Through avenues of brief interviews with experts in their field, fact sheets, parent quizzes, recommended apps, books, and much more.
School TV brings together reputable information from services such as REACHOUT and Beyondblue, Australian Psychological Society, Nutrition Australia, Headspace, and Esafety commission. Such resources provide reliable and accessible information, saving households time and confusion trying to research online across multiple sites.
All parents are welcome to engage with these valuable resources and we welcome your feedback.
For further information please see the following link accessible from the school website https://sfsh.catholic.schooltv.me/ . There are numerous topics that have links to informative fact sheets, videos, and other resources
To get started though given we are entering a new school year please take time to review this wellbeing checklist for primary school student’s. https://sfsh.catholic.schooltv.me/wellbeing_news/special-report-wellbeing-checklist-primary
If you have any questions or concerns between now and my next visit be sure to check in with your wonderful admin team and teachers and they will make sure we get in touch. For now, enjoy the next few weeks and I look forward to my next visit.
