From the Principal’s Desk

Term 3 has started well, with students settling back into routines and engaging positively in their learning. It’s been a vibrant and busy beginning to the term!

We recently celebrated our NAIDOC event, which was a great success. A heartfelt thank you goes to the Major family for their delicious cooking and generous support of the day. We were also privileged to be joined by Kim McCosker, our First Nations Consultant from Townsville Catholic Education, who helped make the celebration even more meaningful. It was a wonderful day of culture, connection, and community.

This term, we have an exciting schedule of visitors coming to the school, including representatives from QLD Cricket, the Toyota Cowboys, Tennis Australia, and Dancenorth. These opportunities continue to enrich our students’ learning experiences and broaden their exposure to sports and the arts.

Our Prep/1 class has an excursion coming up soon, and we are currently waiting for confirmation about Storyfest in Longreach to finalise plans for our Year 2/3 camp.

We are also hosting an Open Evening this term, where families will be invited into classrooms to view student learning and achievements. This evening would run in conjunction with our Prep Information Session for new families and will provide a great opportunity to showcase the wonderful work happening in our school.

Later in the term, I will be taking two weeks of Long Service Leave. A suitable replacement will be in place during this time to ensure continuity and support for students and staff.

Throughout the term, we will also welcome visits from our Education Consultant and Curriculum Consultant as part of our ongoing commitment to high-quality teaching and learning.

Thank you for your continued support and involvement in our school community.

Sharn Greenaway,

Principal

Prep/1 Happenings

Tech-Savvy Learners in Prep/1!

This week in Prep/1, our classroom was buzzing with excitement as we put our Chromebooks to good use! With the help of MathSeeds and Prodigy, students took on Miss Brown’s Tricky Maths Challenge—and they absolutely rose to the occasion!

Our Prep students worked through specially selected MathSeeds tasks, while our Year 1s tackled challenges in Prodigy, showing off their problem-solving skills and mathematical thinking.

We feel incredibly fortunate at St Francis to have access to Chromebooks as part of our learning journey. They’re not just a fantastic resource—they’re also a whole lot of fun! The students loved diving into this digital challenge and were proud of what they achieved.

Miss Brown,

P/1 Teacher

Year 2/3 Happenings

Welcome back to another fun term with 2/3! This week, our inquisitive student scientists had a "sound-tastic" time as they explored how sound travels in waves! Using a metal pan, plastic wrap, and some bouncy sprinkles, students investigated how vibrations move through the air.

When the pan was struck with a spoon — BANG! — the sound energy created vibrations that shook the plastic wrap and made the sprinkles dance with excitement!  The students were amazed to both see and hear sound waves in action.

Miss Allison,

Year 2/3 Teacher

Year 4/5/6 Happenings

It’s been a strong start to Term 3 for our Year 4/5/6 students, who have jumped straight back into learning with great energy and enthusiasm! This fortnight, the classroom has been buzzing with brains hard at work especially during our new Maths unit on Time.

From reading analogue and digital clocks to calculating elapsed time, converting 12-hour and 24-hour formats, and solving real-life time problems, students have been quite literally working around the clock! Year 4s have been strengthening their skills with reading time to the minute and understanding am/pm notation. Year 5s are building confidence with interpreting timetables, while Year 6s are tackling more advanced challenges like calculating time durations across multiple days and applying time knowledge in practical scenarios. We are all over time around here!

Miss Rowe,

Year 4/5/6 Teacher
