From the Principal’s Desk

This week we had the pleasure of hosting our Biggest Morning Tea, bringing together our school and wider community for a truly special event. With over 20 attendees and 32 takeaway boxes, it was a fantastic morning filled with warmth, connection, and generosity. Our students performed so beautifully – I am incredibly proud of their hard work and preparation leading up to their singing. Together, we raised just over $1200, which is an outstanding effort!

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who supported the morning, and a special mention to SPAR and the Hughenden Artisan Collective for your generous raffle donations. Your contributions made a big difference!

As you may be aware, student reports were released yesterday on COMPASS. If you are having any trouble accessing your child’s report, please don’t hesitate to contact the office when we reopen in Term 3.

Please also take note of the new reporting guidelines. A letter outlining these changes was posted to COMPASS in May, and I have included it again below for your reference. These updates have come from Townsville Catholic Education in response to parent feedback collected across the diocese.

Looking ahead to Term 3, we’re excited to kick things off with our NAIDOC Week celebrations in Week 1. Families are warmly invited to join us for a morning of arts, culture, and delicious food. Keep an eye on COMPASS for more details.

Thank you to our amazing students, staff, and families for another wonderful term. Wishing you all a safe and happy holiday!

Sharn Greenaway,

Principal

In this edition of SchoolTV - School Refusal

School refusal, sometimes called school avoidance or school phobia, is not uncommon. It is different to ‘wagging’ or truancy and is often related to worry or anxiety-related issues about going to school. School refusal may start gradually or happen suddenly. Although it is normal for a child to occasionally miss a day of school, parents should only be concerned if a child regularly complains about feeling sick or often asks to stay home due to minor physical complaints.

School refusal is a complex issue as there is rarely a single cause. It affects children of all ages across primary and secondary levels. It can often occur during times of transition at school. More recently, the Coronavirus pandemic has disrupted the educational experience of all students, affecting some more than others. Dealing with a school refusal child can affect the whole family, adding pressure to an already challenging time. School refusal is not considered a formal psychiatric diagnosis. It’s a name given to an emotional and/or behavioural problem.

In this edition of SchoolTV, adult carers will learn how best to approach this issue and work towards a solution.

We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this edition of SchoolTV and we always welcome your feedback. If you have any concerns about your child, please contact the school counsellor for further information or seek medical or professional help.

Prep/1 Enjoy Breakfast Club to Finish the Term!

What better way to end the term than with a warm breakfast shared with friends? Our Prep/1 students have absolutely loved taking part in Breakfast Club this week. Each morning, the room was filled with smiles (and the delicious smell of pancakes and milo!). It was a wonderful opportunity for students to gather together, enjoy a hearty meal, and start the day feeling happy and connected. A big thank you to everyone who helped make it possible — what a special way to finish the term!

Miss Brown,

P/1 Teacher

Year 2/3 Happenings

In Religion, we have been exploring the story of Zacchaeus, a tax collector who changed his ways after encountering Jesus. This powerful story helped us reflect on how our actions can affect other people’s feelings.

To bring this message to life, we used a simple scrap piece of paper. On it, we wrote "other people’s feelings" and asked students to scrunch the paper each time Zacchaeus did something unkind in the scripture. Later, students were asked to smooth the paper out whenever Zacchaeus tried to fix his mistakes and follow Jesus.

At the end of the activity, we noticed the paper was still wrinkled. This led to a thoughtful class discussion about how, even when we try to make things right, our actions can leave a mark. It reminded us that while we all make mistakes, we can choose to learn from them and do better, just like Zacchaeus did.

As we wrap up the term, I’d like to wish all our families a happy and safe school break. Enjoy the time to rest and recharge, and I look forward to seeing everyone back, refreshed and ready for learning, in Term 3!

Miss Allison,

Year 2/3 Teacher

Year 4/5/6 Happenings

As we approach the end of the term, students have demonstrated great focus and perseverance in completing their assessment tasks across all learning areas. Their efforts have been commendable, and it has been rewarding to see the growth and progress made. To celebrate our achievements, students participated in some delicious hands-on science experiments, combining learning with a little end-of-term fun. We have now  turned our attention to our new Mathematics unit on calculating elapsed time, calculating time and utilising timetables. Students will learn to determine the duration between events and apply these skills in practical, real-world contexts leading into Term 3.

It has been a successful and engaging Term 2, and I hope that all students enjoy a well deserved break.

Miss Rowe,

Year 4/5/6 Teacher
