Term 4 Week 5- 2024
From the Principal
Dear Families,
This Friday, we will celebrate the Feast of All Saints, a significant day in our Church’s liturgical calendar when we honor all saints known and unknown. The Feast of All Saints recognises the lives of the holy men and women who have dedicated their lives to Christ, whether through acts of profound service, faith, or devotion. It is a reminder to each of us to strive to live with courage, compassion, and a commitment to the values of our faith. We are pleased to have Sr. Rita joining us for Mass with Communion, which will begin at 8:30 am. We warmly welcome everyone to come along for this meaningful celebration.
This week, Miss Allison has been in Ingham attending a Sounds-Write workshop, a valuable opportunity as we work toward establishing a comprehensive, whole-school literacy program. This initiative reflects our commitment to upskilling staff to deliver the best possible learning experiences for all students. Sounds-Write equips teachers with a clear sequence for introducing the 44 sounds in English and the 175 most common spellings of these sounds. From their earliest years through to Year 6, students are guided from simple spelling concepts to more complex ones, mastering the Initial Code before progressing to the Extended Code and eventually handling polysyllabic words.
Designed around the latest research in cognitive load theory and direct instruction, Sounds-Write requires minimal planning and preparation, allowing teachers to focus on effective, research-based phonics instruction that accelerates learning. We’re excited to see Miss Allison bring her new skills to life in the classroom and further enhance our students' literacy skills.
Have a wonderful weekend,

School TV Topic of the Week-Resilience
Resilience
Resilience is one of those skills that all kids need and should have. It refers to their ability to cope and adapt in situations when confronted with challenges such as adversity, trauma, tragedy, or even stress. It is essential to their mental health and wellbeing as part of their journey to adulthood. It is a skill that can be learned from an early age through the support of an adult role model.
However, being resilient does not mean your child won't experience any difficulties, but it will better equip them to manage those situations. Over-protective parenting can be viewed as being unhelpful towards the building of resilience. Although this may be a natural instinct, potentially experiencing failure is all part of the process. Encouraging children to take healthy risks will help them trust their capacity to deal with uncomfortable situations and increase their capacity for courage.
In this edition of SchoolTV, parents will gain an understanding of how to support their child’s brave behaviour to help them adapt and build resilience.

Miss Allison has been away at a course this week and we have been lucky to have Mrs Bates teaching us. We have been continuing to work hard in all of our subjects! In Maths, the students were working to find missing numbers in sums. Using their understanding of addition and subtraction, the students solved a range of “paddlepop problems”. Check out some of our working out!

Year 5/6 Happenings
This week, the Year 5/6 class has been exploring different types of angles in the classroom! Students have been learning to identify, measure, and draw acute, right, obtuse, and reflex angles, along with complementary and supplementary angles. Through hands-on activities, they’ve measured, compared, and discussed angles found in everyday objects and classroom materials, all while considering the importance of angles in real-world contexts.

Specialist Lessons- Miss Eriksen
For our PE lessons this term, we have been enjoying participating in swimming lessons. The students have been working hard to practise their swimming. The students in P/1 have been developing their understanding of strokes as well as learning to be safe in the water. The students in 2-6 have been focusing on refining their skills for each stroke. We are working towards getting ready for our swimming carnival on the 22nd of November.

Chaplain News
Last Friday, our dedicated Mercy Makers group took part in a meaningful activity to celebrate Seniors Month. The students baked delicious chocolate chip and white chocolate chip biscuits to bring a bit of sweetness and warmth to our community’s elderly residents. The baked treats were shared with seniors at our local hospital and with those served by the Community Care Centre.
This was a wonderful activity that allowed our students to honour the seniors in our community, showing them appreciation and care. We are incredibly proud of our students for embodying the spirit of service and compassion.
