Term 3 Week 4 2024

A Busy and Wonderful Week at St. Francis
We have had a busy and wonderful week here at St. Francis Catholic School! Our Pyjama Day was a huge success, raising $205 for the National Pyjama Foundation, which supports children in foster care. Seeing everyone in their cozy sleepwear was a delight and it’s heartwarming to know that our community came together for such a worthy cause.
Tomorrow is Jeans for Genes Day, and I am excited to bake up a storm tonight in preparation. It’s always a joy to see our students and staff supporting important causes, and I’m sure tomorrow will be another fantastic day of fundraising and fun.
Earlier this week, our students had the opportunity to enjoy "The Snowy" performance organised by the Council. It was an engaging and educational experience that our students thoroughly enjoyed. A big thank you to the Council for bringing such wonderful experiences to our school.
Next week, I am headed to Collinsville for three days to participate in their School Renewal as a panel member. I am looking forward to working with Nic Prietz and seeing everything St. John Bosco's has to offer. It’s always inspiring to collaborate with other educators and learn from each other’s experiences.
This week, our Prep to Year 2 students completed their post-test for the Early Years Project. This project, which involves a pre and post literacy and numeracy test, is conducted across the Townsville Diocese. The Early Years Screening is a collaborative process involving teachers, parents, and students, aiming to improve teacher capability, student learning, and parent engagement.
The screening process includes pre-screening, evidence-based feedback to parents, teachers, and students, targeted pedagogy, alignment with the Australian Curriculum, parental engagement, post-screening, and continued evidence-based feedback. This thorough method provides valuable information in numeracy, oral language, and literacy. Our staff then unpack the results with our TCE Curriculum Advisor and Speech Language Pathologist to inform classroom teaching and learning. These results are shared with parents during our PLP meetings in terms 1 and 3, ensuring everyone is informed and involved in the educational journey of our students.
We also have some big events coming up this term. Planning for the Fete is well underway, and we are grateful to the families who have already volunteered their time and assistance. More information about volunteer opportunities for stalls and cooking will be sent out in the coming weeks.
Thank you for your continued support, and have a wonderful weekend!

Prep/1 Happenings
This week, the students have been working super hard with practising their writing both in English and in Mathematics. They have been developing their ability to sound out words and write them on whiteboards. Check out some of the super awesome writing we did of our numbers during the week! |
Year 2/3/4 Happenings
In 2/3/4 Religion, students have been learning about the Holy Trinity. They have been learning that God is made up of 3 parts or bodies - God as the Father, God as the Son and God as the Holy Spirit. In these pictures, students are blending colours together to represent the blending of the three parts of the Holy Trinity.

Year 5/6 Happenings
This week, the Year 5/6 students explored the importance of quality writing through the story “The Boy Who Tried to Shrink His Name” by Sandhya Parappukkaran. As part of our focus on the 6+1 Traits of Writing, students researched the meanings and origins of their names, discovering personal stories and cultural connections. This activity helped them practise the trait, allowing them to incorporate these ideas into their writing from an author.

School Captains
This week at St Francis we decided to change it up by writing, what our journey has been like at St Francis. Please read along and enjoy! Hi my name is Adley Crozier and this is my story of St Francis. It all began when I was told that I need to go to big school and start prep. When I heard that my heart started thumping, I was so so excited. Once I got here at St Francis I knew it was a safe, kind and reliable school! As the years went on I achieved the job in 3/4 to look after the school chicken’s, I can still remember Miss Karen and I would walk down to the chook house each day and check every chook and if they had laid any eggs! In 2023 I was voted to be the 2024 school captain along with Bob Harriman. Six months later I was selected to represent St Francis in Rockhampton for the 2024 Touch State Championships Trials. It was one of the best five days of sport ever. In my seven years of schooling at St Francis I have to say English was and still is my favourite subject. When I leave St Francis I will miss it and home everyday. Thanks Adley Hi my name is Robert (Bob) Harriman my story of St Francis all started when I was in grade 1. I used to go to a school down in Muttaburra, I changed over to St Francis in 2019 where I started my journey of making memories. As soon as I came to Hughenden I fitted right in. I knew I was going to love it here. In 2023 I was voted school captain alongside Adley Crozier, I made Northwest in athletics and spent many lunch times in the library with Miss Margy and Makey Makey. I've lasted six years with my lovely teachers and classmates. When I graduate I will go to the Cathedral School Townsville. I am looking forward to boarding school, but will miss St Francis. Thanks Bob |

Prep/1 are Superheroes!
In P/1 Health this term, we have been learning about how we are growing and getting bigger. The students each made their own book all about their superpowers and the things that they can do now that they couldn’t do when they were younger or a baby. We then spoke about things that they have learnt to do which made them feel like a superhero (proud of themselves).
