Term 1 Week 8 - 2024
From the Principal
Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members,
Week 8 is almost done and dusted and we reach the final 2 weeks of school for Term 1! This week we had International Women's Day, and what a wonderful time to recognise our strong, resilient, passionate staff members. I'm very blessed each day to work with a wonderful bunch of women that help care for and shape the minds of our little learners! Our school acknowledges and honors the invaluable contributions and achievements of women worldwide. We also recognise our mothers, grandmothers, aunt's, students, and community members for the wonderful impact that women have on our lives!
This week marks an important milestone for students in years 3 and 5 as they gear up for the NAPLAN assessments. NAPLAN, the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy, is a vital tool in evaluating student progress across Australia. As students prepare to showcase their skills in literacy and numeracy, educators and parents alike rally behind them, providing support and encouragement every step of the way. These assessments not only offer insight into individual student performance but also help inform teaching practices and educational policies nationwide. The students kicked off the week with their writing test and have done a fabulous job. We wish them all the best for the remainder of the testing across the next week!
This Friday is St Patrick's Day and to celebrate we are dressing in green! The students are able to wear green for a gold coin donation and purchase a green milkshake at second break. All of the funds raised will go straight to Project Compassion! We look forward to a great day with plenty of green!

Prep/1 Happenings
In Prep/1 the students have explored a variety of mathematical concepts! Year 1 has been focusing on using number lines to solve addition sums and problems. We used our floor number line mat so that students could use their whole bodies to work out the answers. Prep has delved into direction again, specifically looking at positional language including inside, outside, on top of, under, above, below, near, beside and between.
Miss Brown,
Year 2/3/4 Happenings
2/3/4 students have been practicing their writing skills this term. In some lessons, Miss Allison will give them “free writing” time, where students are given an opportunity to express themselves freely, whether that be through facts, stories, and more. Although, 2/3/4 is a big fan of stories. Here are a couple of their stories that 2/3/4 have made this week.
Year 5/6 Happenings
In 5/6, we've been enjoying getting to know each other more, through a special take home project called "A Week in the Life of..." book. This involves a book that travels home with a different student each week. The chosen student has the opportunity to share insights into their daily life, offering a glimpse into their family activities and routines throughout the week. Every student will get to experience taking our book home to share with their families. This project serves as a wonderful avenue for developing connections within our class. Not only does it allow our teacher, Miss Rowe, to gain a better understanding of each student, but it also provides a platform for students to learn more about their peers. Through sharing their experiences, interests, and daily happenings, students develop understanding, and appreciation for one another's lives outside of the school environment.

Specialist Lessons- Miss Eriksen
This week in Art, the 2/3/4 students used their knowledge of the elements of Art to complete two different artworks. We used oil pastels and watercolour paint to create snowflakes as well as a lake based on Monet’s painting. We explored what elements of Art we could find in our paintings such as lines, shape and space.
SFSH Year 6 Captains
Dear Parents, Carers, and Fellow community members,
As week 8 comes to an end, we would like to congratulate Adley, Rory, Beau, Rhianna, Maci and Miranda for representing St Francis School at Julia Creek for Midwest selection. We are excited to announce that four students from our school made it through to the next stage. These students were Adley, Beau, Maci, and Rhianna.
Next weekend Beau will be participating in North west trials for Rugby League in Cloncurry to have a chance to make it to states! Miss Rowe will join him, but instead coach the girl’s rugby league in Hughenden! Maci will also join Miss Rowe and trial for the north west team in both Rugby League as well as Netball. Some words of wisdom from Beau is that he will run it straight!
On the 19th of April, Adley will be making a road trip to Mt Isa for touch football, she unfortunately sustained an injury during Midwest trials, so we hope it will get better in the meantime! Sadly Rhianna can’t make it to the Midwest trials for netball, instead she will be enjoying some music from P!NK. We wish all of our classmates luck in their next level of trials.
Kind regards,
Your 2024 School Captains
